My beginner friendly patterns

Hello there! I thought I would introduce you to the most beginner friendly patterns in my collection. If you are a newly obsessed knitter or just haven’t gotten around to read patterns yet, I hope you’ll find these patterns easy and fun to knit!

Angrboda Shawl

“This pattern a homage to autumn weather, wool and fantastical worlds where you can escape when the real world gets a bit too much.”

Needles:
5.5 mm circular needles
Yarn:
Sårk, Gotlands Spinneri - 200 g

If you want to use a different yarn, change the needle to one that will fit. I recommend sizing up a bit so the shawl turns out a bit airier.

This pattern only require you to know the knit stitch and yarn overs - perfect for beginners (or a mindless knit for more experienced knitters). It’s really great if you’re not sure how much your yarn will last, because you start knitting it in the bottom (the pointy end) and then you’ll increase until you are satisfied, or run out of yarn. The shape will make it suitable for both a big shawl, but also a shawlette that you can use in your hair.

Choose a fluffy yarn and a bigger needle for ultimate floof effect and this shawl will be your best friend!

A few suggestions for yarn alternatives:

  • Double plötulopi (or 1 strand plötulopi and 1 strand mohair)

  • Double nutiden

  • Hillesvåg Varde

  • Lettlopi + 1 strand mohair

  • Fritidsgarn from Sandnes

Rotad Cardigan

Yarn
Håndvaerksgarn, Hjeholts Uldspinneri
200 m / 100 g

Gauge
18 st x 24 rows = 10 x 10 cm/ 4 x 4 in on the larger needle

Needles
3.5 mm circular needle, 80 or 100 cm
4.0 mm circular needle, 80 or 100 cm
If you have to change the needle to get the right gauge, do so.

Sizing
Sizes: 1, 2, 3 (4, 5, 6) 7, 8, 9
Bust circumference on the finished garment: 85, 92, 101 (110, 119, 127) 132, 139, 147 cm / 34, 36,8, 40 (44, 48, 50) 52,8, 56, 59 “
I wear my Rotad with approx. 5 cm negative ease.

This is a simple, easy cardigan with a bit bigger needles than my Rota Cardigan which is very popular. It’s the same fit and style, but you work this on 4.0 mm needles. That gives you a warm, but not super hot, cardigan that you can wear with dresses, skirts and high waisted jeans, if you make it cropped. Another great thing with cropped designs are that the yarn amount isn’t that huge and you can get away with at least 1 skein less than if you would make it hip length.

For this it’s good to know the following techniques:

  • Knit and purl stitches

  • Short rows (watch a video about them to know the basics)

  • Increasing and decreasing (this is explained in the pattern though)

And a few yarn suggestions for this pattern:

  • Håndvaerksgarn from Hjeholts Uldspinneri (the suggested yarn for the pattern)

  • Ullcentrum 3ply

  • Nutiden yarn

  • Filcolana Peruvian Highland Wool

Eir Mittens

Yarn
Lettlopi, 100 m/ 50 g
colors shown in pattern
2 skeins
1 skein, natural white

Needles
4.0 mm, 80 cm circular needle or 4.0 mm DPN’s

Gauge
20 st x 22 rows in colorwork - 10 x 10 cm

Sizes
1 (2)

Okay, so don’t be scared by all the colorwork in these mittens! If you know your knit stitch you’ll know how to do colorwork! And to start with a project in lettlopi is great I think, because the yarn is really forgiving and filling and blocks out beautifully! And the latvian braid might look scary, but it’s actually only purl stitches with a twist (quite literally)!

The techniques used in this pattern:

  • Colorwork

  • Latvian braid

  • Increasing and decreasing

I would highly recommend using lettlopi for this pattern, as I wrote above: the texture of the yarn is perfect for first time colorwork-knitters and it’s very easy to work with.

Those are three of my patterns that are suitable for new knitters! I hope you liked this post and if you want to learn more about my woolly world you can subscribe to my newsletter below :)
